Exotic
& Domestic Placement
A little reminder,
WRINM mission is dedicated to "wildlife"
patients. These are native animals protected by state
and federal law. Many people confuse the meaning of "wildlife"
and "exotic". There is also a third option -
a "domestic" animal. That generally means any
breed of animal that is unable to survive in the wild.
These are animals that have been "domesticated"
through a process of artificial selection. A process that
can take hundreds of years. If they are living outside
the care of people they are called "feral".
So as a rule...WILDLIFE RESCUE IS
NOT A RESOURCE FOR DOMESTIC ANIMALS - like house
rabbits, domestic ducks (over 2lbs, Mallards smaller than
2lbs are wild and protected), chickens, dogs, cats, domestic
pet doves, goats, hamsters, guinea pigs, Vietnamese pot-belly
pigs, etc.
Okay, back to "wildlife" and "exotic".
Wildlife is defined as any animal indigenous (Native;
not imported) to your continent. As we are in the North
American continent. Wildlife is any animal native to North
America. These are, for the most part, protected by state
and federal law. An exotic animal is any animal not native
to North America or animals from a different continent.
So as a rule...WILDLIFE RESCUE DOES
NOT DEAL WITH EXOTIC ANIMALS - like parakeets,
ferrets, most parrots, primates, iguanas, peacocks, Guinea
fowl, etc.
Now that we got that out of the way! Our volunteers and
public do occasionally, misidentify an animal. When this
happens and as there are very few resources that focus
on birds we make every effort to find homes for these
animals and are in touch with other organizations that
specialize.

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE DOWN YOUR HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS IN THE FALL?
by Madge Rice
It is a myth that you should take your feeders down early in the fall so the hummingbirds will know when it's time to migrate. This is not true! Hummingbirds have been migrating for thousands of years without our help. They know when it's time to migrate. The correct time to take your feeder down is ... JUST BEFORE THE FEEDER WILL FREEZE!!!
There may be late juveniles who haven't headed south for the winter yet, a traveler who was held up along the way, or possibly an injured bird who needs a little more time to rest or heal before attempting the trip. Hummingbirds can become very dependent upon your feeder this time of year when there are fewer bugs and flowers. If you take your feeder down too early, you force them to leave before they are ready. All the late hummingbirds and I say "Thank you so much, and we appreciate you and your feeder!"

Education Program 2007
by Madge Rice
How many programs do you think our awesome Education Team has participated in this year? They have participated in 92 events, representing over 232 hours of education to 22,000 people - children and adults. They have earned $9,143 in sales, donations, and raffle tickets to help rehabilitate and care for our orphaned and injured wildlife. GRRR-eat job, everyone!!!! We have some very exciting programs coming soon, such as Festival of Giving at Coronado Mall and Festival of the Cranes at Bosque del Apache's on November 17-18. I think this is everyone's favorite event. I know it's mine!
Our Education Team keeps growing and is now comprised of 5 Senior Handlers, and 30 conscientious, professional, and personable handlers. Several of you have joined our team this year and have been busy helping at some of our events. I would like to say, "WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS" and "THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART TO EVERYONE IN OUR INCREDIBLE EDUCATION TEAM. WE COULDN'T DO ANY OF IT WITHOUT YOUR ENTHUSIASM, COMMITMENT, AND SUPPORT. YOU'RE THE GRRR-EATEST THERE IS!!!!"
So .... take a bow and pat yourselves on the back. You have certainly earned it!!!! I would also like to thank spouses, friends, and partners for your patience, help, and understanding. We sometimes get so busy and involved that we may occasionally forget to show our appreciation for your support. THANK YOU TO YOU TOO!
