A word from our volunteer coordinator Mikal Deese:
Wildlife Rescue Training classes for new volunteers!
April 3rd and 11th, 2010
Hi!
The Wildlife Rescue volunteers are enjoying the last few quiet weeks before "the baby season" comes again. Spring and Summer are our busy time, with the clinic open all day, 7 days a week. We'll be needing extra hands to care for the 2,500 critters brought to us for help this year. No experience is necessary. We see all sorts of wild things and some incredibly cute babies. We'd love to have you join us!
The first half of the volunteer training will be held Saturday, April 3rd, at the NM Game and Fish Office (3841 Midway Place NE), from 9am to 2 pm. Bring lunch because we have a special noon treat planned that you won't want to miss. The second half will be on Sunday, April 11th, also from 9am to 2pm. This class will be at the Wildlife Rescue Clinic (inside the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park at the far west end of Candelaria).
The training classes are free, but you will need a manual which is $25, purchased on the day of the class or ahead of time at the clinic. Friends or family members can share. After attending both classes you pass an open-book test, then you're ready to start at the clinic. It's best to attend the classes, but if that is impossible you may watch them on DVD's. You are welcome to work as much (or as little) as you wish. Most people work either a morning or afternoon shift, one day a week. You will learn more as you go along, and as your skills increase you will be able to do more. An experienced, federally permitted rehabilitator is the manager on every shift. That person is responsible for everything that goes on, so you are never left without guidance and direction. Clinic volunteers must be at least age 13. Ages 11 and 12 are welcome with a parent.
Beyond working in the clinic, WRI needs volunteers to answer over 10,000 phone messages that come into our hotline each year. Messages can be checked from any telephone. There are always resource people available to help with new questions or odd situations.
WRI also needs help at the intake desk, taking information from rescuers, recording progress notes and final dispositions for every critter. Another team of people handle our educational raptors at programs, classes and events. Some of us do a bit of everything! I'm sure you'll find the areas that are most satisfying for you and that mesh with the rest of your life.
To register for the classes, please respond to mikaldeese@aol.com, with your full name, address, telephone number and email address. Feel free to call me with any questions at 897-0439. You'll get to know a great crew of friendly, caring people that are dedicated to protecting and helping wildlife. You are truly needed!
