dear friends of wildlife rescue, inc. of new Mexico:

In the almost three decades since Wildlife Rescue, Inc. of New Mexico (WRINM) began, this is the first time we have put out a call for programs support. This year we have a couple of projects in the works that will not only show you how your support has been put to good use in the past, but may challenge you to make a much-needed, year-end contribution to help us continue these projects.

outdoor habitat for avian species

Did you know that WRINM’s educational team participated in 92 events in 2008?  This represents 232+ hours of education to over 22,000 people. Our educational raptors and other species are in high demand at presentations throughout the state. Many of our educational birds also act as foster parents and companions for rehabilitation birds. Foster parents enable orphaned youngsters to learn how to be birds from adults of their own species, greatly increasing their chances of survival after release. Lastly, these companion birds can reduce the stress on captive rehabilitation birds, speed their recovery time, and ensure a more-successful reintroduction to their wild habitats.

Wildlife Rescue is in need of additional outdoor housing (mews) for education birds. In addition, our existing housing needs upgrades and maintenance to ensure the safety and well-being of the birds in our care. Additional mews are also needed for on-going rehabilitation. These are critical for flight training and assessment, among other things.

analysis of wildlife rehabilitation intake data

Those of you who receive Wildlife Rescue’s newsletter are aware that two WRINM volunteers just completed a one-year research project for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (under a grant from their Share with Wildlife program). We are grateful for the Department’s support, which involved analysis of 19 years of WRINM’s animal acquisition records—with a focus on threatened, endangered, and species of greatest conservation need. The findings were interesting, particularly as regards “cause of encounter”, the types of things that negatively impact our wildlife and cause animals to be brought to our clinic. The 200-page report (just under 2 MB) can be directly accessed at RAVEN PROJECT: Application of WRI rehabilitation acquisition data to state endangered and threatened species and species in greatest conservation need.

The Department has provided additional grant funding for FY 2010 supporting a pilot project to expand data collection.  The aim of the project is to standardize rehabilitation records across the state to enable analyses that may affect planning for wildlife management in NM.  In order to complete the project as designed, an additional $3,000 beyond the award is required, and we are turning to our friends and supporters to obtain the shortfall.

day after day ...

Wildlife Rescue, Inc. of New Mexico has received somewhere in the neighborhood of 70,000 animals in our years of voluntary operation. Most animals (bird, mammal, amphibian, or reptile) require not only medical supplies, but also temporary safe housing (including incubators, heating pads, and aquaria) and species-specific diets (from milk replacement to mealworms and mice). Please note that, as an all-volunteer organization, WRINM has no labor expenses. Our physical clinic is housed through partnership at the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park. All donations are used for ongoing animal care. We would greatly appreciate your partnering with us for any of these three immediate needs:
